Have you got old, broken down electrical appliances around the house?
Well, our current unit of inquiry this month is about materials, and that means you can give these broken things another purpose…to accelerate your child’s learning!
Our central idea of this unit is “Materials can provide benefits and pose challenges for society and the environment.” Children will be looking into the following lines of inquiry in an effort to truly comprehend this idea:
- Ways that humans change materials (change)
- Reasons that humans change materials (causation)
- Results of changing materials (responsibility)
One great way for students to begin to understand the vast expanse of materials that humans use is to break things, especially complex machines such as electronics, apart in order to see how many materials go into their creation.
As such, you can help your child, and his or her classmates, inquire into this central idea by allowing him or her to bring your broken appliances into school in order to see and explore first hand these different materials.
Basically, we are going to try and separate various materials in these electronics, classify these materials based on properties and the materials themselves, and then inquire into where these materials come from, how they are changed to create these appliances, and what are some effects of the altering of these materials. Some examples of appliances that would prove useful to our study are: broken blenders, old mobile phones, used hard drives and computers, old radios, etc.
Thank you so much for your assistance and support of the children’s learning.
